Mail Backup
When a mail server goes down and someone tries to send you an email, the message will be bounced back to the user. Don't lose valuable email with Managed Email's backup mail services.
Background:
When an email is sent, the server looks to see which server handles mail for the domain using DNS MX records. MX records specify which server(s) control mail for a given domain. Each MX record is given a priority, the lowest being the primary mail server.
Mail delivery is first attempted on the lowest numbered priority; if it cannot connect to that one it tries the second lowest priority and so on. If no mail servers can be reached mail is then bounced back to the sender.
Backup MX:
Managed Email's backup mail services act as your second priority mail server. If your mail server cannot be reached mail is then sent to Managed Email's backup mail server. Once it reaches our server it is queued and continually checked to see if your mail server is online. When your server is back online the queued mail is delivered.
By default Managed Email will keep attempting to deliver mail to your server for 5 days. If it cannot be delivered after 5 days it will then bounce it back to the sender. If you are anticipating an extended outage you can make special arrangements with Managed Email. All of Managed Email's mail servers are protected using industry standard blacklists including SpamCop, MAPS, and Spamhaus.
